Vehicle for the lyrics of black Peru |
Susana Baca has added a whole new timbre to the music of the coast. She proudly sings and dances the suffering and rebellion of her forebears in the rhythms of the sugar ans cotton plantations of the north and south coasts, and in the hybrid melodies of the melting pot of Lima. She uses vals, festejo and landó as vehicles for the lyrics of Peruvian and Latin American poets whose texts echo her experience and the issues she holds dear. When she pays homage to the female characters in her songs, she does not sing a sad lament, but proclaims her solidarity with an irresistible swing.
