Caldeira Cabral, Pedro

image of Caldeira Cabral, Pedro Master of Portuguese guitar

Pedro Caldeira Cabral started learning the guitarra portuguesa, the flute and the guitar, at the age of ten. His home is the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, where he grew up surrounded by the sound of classical music: the German romantics and Baroque music were the standard fare. He listened to it and practiced it.
When he was fifteen, he strayed from this musical path, becoming more interested in the guitar music, played in the older party of Lisbon. He taught himself to play the guitar and soon progressed to the stage where he could even play compositions of his own. In this way, he also developed his own compositional style. At first, this was entirely influenced by the popular guitar music of the taverns, but it later became a more conscious style, into which flowed Cabral's affinities for other musical directions, such as medieval music, Portuguese folk music and, more recently, modern and extra-European music.

It is especially worth stressing Cabral's intense dedication to the traditional music of his country. He has mastered all of the many varieties of guitar instruments, which are played throughout the land, from the north to the south. His name turns up again and again on all the records made by Portugal's greatest singer-songwriters. As a guitarra portuguesa soloist, Cabral has already performed in many European countries, as well as in the USA, Brazil and China.
